New study measures cell weight by observation

It is not easy to guess the number of Jerry beans (a bean-shaped candy) in a candy jar, so try to guess the weight of a cell only by observation

Recently, a research team completed this "feat". They just used a standard laboratory microscope and a digital camera to successfully measure the weight of the cells. The researchers published the technical results online in the Physical Review Letter (PRL).

By analyzing how the target object bends and refracts light, the researchers can infer the composition of the target object using image processing algorithms.

Understanding the composition of an object can help scientists infer its density (on the right side of the figure above), and because the microscope can also be used to measure the size and volume of an object, the combination of these data allows researchers to measure the quality of the cell.

The research report pointed out that by using this technology, the participating scientists found that the average dry mass of human red blood cells was 27.2 trillionths of a gram.

This data is consistent with past measured values. In the past, obtaining this data depended on specially customized instruments.

The researchers pointed out that this new method is expected to help monitor how living cells grow and change over time, such as responding to disease or environmental changes.
