The status of color printing in Photo office environment

The structure of powder printing

Powder spraying is a type of direct printing that uses toner to be directly sprayed onto a recording medium such as paper. It is completely possible to achieve stable and high-quality printing quickly at low cost.

The structure of the powder printing is shown in Figure 1. The charged toner is sprayed toward the back electrode applied with a high voltage of 1 kV through a thin substrate (FPC) with fine holes and attached to the paper passing between the FPC and the back electrode. The micro-holes arranged on the FPC are equipped with a ring electrode, and the toner is sprayed according to the voltage of the actuator to control the toner. The toner attached to the paper forms a fine dot, which is attached to the ring electrode passing around The ideas together form text and images, and then, like laser printers, the toner is fixed on the paper with pressure and heat, and at the same time the FPC is purified in preparation for the next printing.

Features of powder printing

(1) Less color misalignment

Photo color printing, due to the deviation of toner positioning, will become a color misalignment, thereby affecting image quality. In terms of powder spraying, as shown in Figure 2, four-color printing heads are arranged in series on a precision frame, and only the recording medium paper is moved during the development stroke. Therefore, it is possible to improve the accuracy and reduce the occurrence of color misalignment. At the same time, the goal of reducing manufacturing costs is achieved by simplifying the structure.

(2) Resolution

At present, the powder spraying technology has reached a good image quality of 600dpi. Even if it is possible to achieve 1200dpi, the Aray company mentioned later, in order to improve the quality of the photographic image, considering the improvement of resolution, it is better to use multi-level gray scale to complete the printing, and focus on the latter development.

(3) Gray ladder

The multi-step gray scale ladder mentioned in the photo above is actually one of the biggest advantages of powder spraying. As shown in Figure 3, the pulse modulation method can be used to finely adjust the gray scale equivalent to the dot part to obtain excellent image quality with a lower resolution. At present, it is still being developed with gray scales of eight-order tone, and the technology of realizing sixteen-order tone is being discussed.

(4) High-speed printing

High-speed printing can be achieved. Currently under development, A4 full color prints out 12 to 16 images per minute, which is at the same speed as a standard office black and white laser printer. If you do a simple desk calculation, the potential of powder spraying is 600dpi resolution, 100μs printing pulse, and A4 full-color output of 84 sheets per minute. In fact, from the perspective of FPC manufacturing problems, development schedule and other constraints, it is not easy to achieve this level of performance, but in the future it is entirely possible to reach the level of 30 sheets per minute.

(5) Low cost

In terms of structure, when the component parts are lightened, miniaturization and low cost are entirely possible. In addition, in the existing laser printer, the photosensitive drum must be replaced regularly, but in the powder-sprayed printer, FPC can be used permanently, so it can reduce the working capital.

Aray's dusting technology

Here is an introduction to the powder spraying technology developed by the Swedish company Aray. The company's strategy is to use the powder spraying technology invented by the founder Ove Larson in 1986 and provide its patent license to manufacturers of printers, copiers and fax machines. At the same time, new developments and patents including peripheral technologies and supplementary technologies are used to protect new developments. The user is granted the right to use patented technology and know-how, as well as the right to use powder sprayed trademarks.

As one of Sweden's development bases, ArayJapan was also established in Yokohama, Japan in 1997. This is an effort to provide services to Japanese users. Among the company's 45 employees, 32 are engaged in development and research.
