Researchers at the MIT Media Lab in the United States have developed a new optical label Bokode that stores more data and is more secure than barcodes of the same size.
Bokode is much smaller than traditional bar codes. It measures and interprets information by measuring the brightness and angle of the light emitted by the Bokode tag. With a standard camera, the identity of an object and the relative angle of the optical tag can be detected from a distance.
Compared with RFID tags, the current price of the new Bokode tag is higher, but researchers say that the price can be reduced to US$0.05 each when it comes to volume production.
