SNAP——Printing Parameter Description of Newsprint Advertisement (I)

Foreword

What is SNAP?
This specification was originally published in October 1984 and later reprinted in 1987, 1989 and 1994 respectively. From the year of 84 to the present, the total circulation of the book has reached 25,000 copies. The Specification for Newsprint Advertising Production (SNAP) is designed to improve the print quality of newspapers and improve the accuracy of information conversion. SNAP is mainly for advertisers, advertising agencies, publishers, prepress managers, material suppliers, commercial printers, and newspaper printers. This parameter description applies to proofing in roll newsprint and coldset printing (sometimes called “non-thermoset” printing) methods such as offset, direct offset, letterpress or flexo. The range of products is very extensive, including newspapers, pre-printed advertising inserts, and printing on other printed materials. Note: SNAP is not printed for magazines, catalogs, packaging, or direct mail, nor is it suitable for sheetfed, gravure, and thermosetting offset processes. This type of process also has corresponding technical specifications.

Why use SNAP?
In the process of copying, the effective transmission of information helps to express the designer’s ideas accurately, effectively and in a timely manner. SNAP provides guidance for the following professionals:

Designers, printing specialists, art directors, prepress specialists, advertising agencies (analog and electronic processes), editors, market developers, service representatives, color separation companies (electronic prepress studios), printing clients, printers, cold Solid-printed material providers.

SNAP Key Points The latest version of SNAP has been further expanded. Based on the original web offset parameters, the technical parameters related to flexo and embossing of newsprint have been added. These parameters apply equally to other non-coated wood pulp papers.

SNAP solves the problem of cold solid copying of non-coated wood pulp papers, and has nothing to do with printing matter that occurs on other substrates such as non-coated wood-free paper, corrugated paper, or other materials.

In SNAP, you can find the parameter values that should be taken for different characteristics during production and measurement, and the allowable error range. Use these expectations to achieve predictable, high-quality printing.

The SNAP committee supports industry standards. References to and references to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (ANSI) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards have been referenced in this manual. See Appendix III for a list of SNAP-related standards.

In this manual, SNAP uses the term "net/enlargement (TVI)" instead of "net enlargement" to express more accurately. In addition to the special labeling, the density referred to in SNAP is absolute density (including paper density).

The parameters contained in SNAP are the most complete and authoritative. If you want to modify it, you need to discuss it with the printer and the newspaper.

Cold-duty replication process In the pre-electronic prepress technology area, the roles and responsibilities of advertisers, agents, prepress service providers, newspapers, and printers are constantly changing. The advertising agency may now submit the prepared electronic documents directly to the newspaper or printer and bypass the prepress service provider. A clear understanding of the role of each department is very important to obtain high-quality prints in a timely manner.

The manuscript generation department's printing process begins with the department that designs and creates the manuscript—the advertiser, the agent, the design studio, or the prepress service provider. Their responsibilities include:
Train employees to better understand and use the SNAP parameter descriptions;
Prepare and provide digital or analog manuscripts in a manner consistent with SNAP standards;
When submitting a manuscript to a printer or newspaper company, prepare an accurate and complete job description for the analog manuscript and the digital manuscript;
If the material does not comply with the SNAP parameters, promptly remind the printer or newspaper company and negotiate alternative methods;
Assign experienced technicians to answer questions raised by printers or newspaper companies;
Communicating with other people engaged in cold-solid copying process;
If some parameters cannot be achieved due to some limitations of the cold-fix printing process, it is necessary to explain the reason to the designer or related personnel in the creation process.

The responsibilities of the printer/press printer or newspaper include:
Train employees to better understand and use the SNAP parameter descriptions;
If the provided proofs meet the SNAP parameter requirements, they should be duplicated as far as possible according to the appearance of proofs;
Prepare SNAP-compliant digital and physical manuscripts;
Manage the imaging process to meet SNAP's expectations;
When the manuscript or electronic document does not comply with the SNAP requirements, it promptly reminds the supplier of possible incomplete matching with the standard;
Assign experienced technicians to answer questions from advertisers, agents, prepress service providers, or other related personnel;
Communicating with other people engaged in cold-solid copying process;
If some parameters cannot be achieved due to some limitations of the cold-fix printing process, it is necessary to explain the reason to the designer or related personnel in the creation process.

Responsibilities of material suppliers' raw material suppliers (eg, digital or physical materials, consumables, hardware, software, etc.) include:
Train employees to better understand and use the SNAP parameter descriptions;
Provide products that contribute to the cold-solid replication process;
Provide digital or physical materials that conform to the SNAP parameter descriptions;
If the material does not meet SNAP standards, discuss with the person involved in the printing process, explain why the requirements cannot be met, discuss alternative methods, assign experienced technicians to answer advertisers, agents, prepress service providers, or other related Personnel questions;
Communicate and cooperate with other people engaged in cold-solid replication technology and provide technical support and related analysis
