A group of students at the University of Tokyo, under the leadership of architect Kengo Kuma, created an extremely complex building structure using 3D printing pens .

The building, which the team calls "large-scale hand-painted structures", was created by the creators in a 3D space using a 3D printing pen to extrude thermoplastics in a 3D space under the guidance of a digital tracking system.

It is understood that the line segments extruded by the creators using the 3D printing pen are connected by acrylic rods to construct an object which has good structural stability when tensioned and also has a certain strength when compressed. This makes the structure more durable than most 3D printed structures, allowing each creator to play freely according to his or her own preferences during the manufacturing process.

Kevin Clement, a member of the team, believes the project can help prove that human intuition can still play a role in digital construction techniques. “Technology is traditionally used to automate and replace human labor,” he said. “But the problem with this approach is that it fails to take advantage of human intuition in the manufacturing process.”

He added: "We believe that our approach can change the current state of machine manufacturing and human manufacturing."

Clement and his team belong to the Obuchi Laboratory at the University of Tokyo and are led by Yusuke Obuchi, former director of the Architectural Association Program, as part of 30 global architecture and urban planning projects.

This larger project was supervised by the famous Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who also runs his own research laboratory. But for this project by Clement, the mentor is Yusuke Obuchi.

The largest structure the team has built so far is a small pavilion, which is now on display at the Ozone Gallery in Shinjuku. To build this work, they used a 3D tracking system to calculate the exact position of the 3D pen in real time to help the creator accurately present his or her intentions. When the user holds the button of the 3D pen, the material is squeezed out of its tip nozzle. At first these materials were molten and, when cooled, became clear plastic.

Clement said: "For us, the interesting thing about this system is that we can modify its shape to suit different environmental conditions, and it is easy to increase or decrease the number of members involved in the build, which means that anyone can participate in common. Create this complex full-size structure.

It is understood that the building structure they created is temporary and the life cycle is expected to be about nine months. But they can also use 3D printing pens to add extra stems to help strengthen areas of weakness and even adapt them to new features.

In addition, designers want to use this project to explore the democratization of the manufacturing process – inviting the public to participate in the modification and expansion of the structure, while at the same time they want to test the durability of the structure under different weather conditions.
