Last spring, Lockheed Martin ’s Advanced Laboratory demonstrated a robot prototype that can use sensors to simulate the surrounding environment, detect potential risks, estimate line of sight, and find good hiding places. The next generation of monitoring robot products may integrate sensors similar to those on prototype robots, with more powerful artificial intelligence and a hidden body.
This robot can dive into the sewer pipe, crawl under the floor, or coil in a circle and stand vertically to get a better view. It can even shed a body, reduce the noise of crawling or detonate the warhead during the assassination mission.
Natural movement
The six-foot snake-like robot is connected to the polymer body with flexible joints and is driven by an electric motor. The software controls the robot to move and determines the best way to move in each case, such as creeping, rotating, and zigzag.
3D positioning
The snake-like robot's radar camera can scan the surrounding environment 360 degrees to determine the distance of each reflecting surface, forming a "point group" reading. The software connects these points and transforms them into a three-dimensional model of the surrounding environment. The snake-shaped robot can use this model to determine the threat within the line of sight, bypass the danger zone, and find and crawl towards the hiding point.
More sensitive sensors
A set of directional microphones allows the robot to detect people approaching. By comparing the time the sound reaches the microphone, the snake-shaped robot can detect the dangerous position, direction and speed, and use these data to determine whether it needs to be hidden.
