European study says that more intake of flavonoids can help women prevent gastric cancer

A new Spanish survey found that daily intake of flavonoids in plant foods in moderation can help reduce the risk of stomach cancer in women. But for men, this effect has not been found.

In the daily diet, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, tea and other plant-derived foods are rich in flavonoids. Researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Spain introduced in the new issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that for women, they should eat more foods rich in flavonoids in the diet, and add less red Meat and processed meat products can reduce the risk of stomach cancer.

The research team conducted an 11-year follow-up survey of nearly 500,000 volunteers from 10 European countries. During the investigation, a total of 683 people developed gastric cancer, including 288 women with gastric cancer. Analysis of female volunteers found that the highest group with a daily intake of more than 580 mg of flavonoids had a 51% lower risk of stomach cancer compared with the lowest group with a daily intake of less than 200 mg.

However, the researchers also reminded that their findings do not confirm that simply taking a large amount of flavonoids can prevent gastric cancer, because the risk of gastric cancer is also related to other factors. In their investigation, no significant correlation was found between the amount of flavonoids ingested by men and the risk of stomach cancer, possibly because men ’s risk of stomach cancer is also affected by several important factors such as smoking and drinking.
